Why plant Profusion Flowering Crabapple?
Celebrate spring with a bang! When the days turn sweet and mild, and the birds belt out their love songs, Profusion Crabapple joins in on the spring festivities with a glorious display of purplish pink blossoms. The lightly fragrant blooms attract grateful pollinators that hum and buzz as they move contentedly from flower to flower. Their work is evident in fall when the half-inch, deep red crabapples appear like ornaments. If you’re so inclined, the fruits cook up into a delicious crabapple jelly. Otherwise, leave them on the tree for decoration and for the songbirds that will eventually come through, feasting on the treasure they have discovered.
Profusion is an heirloom Crabapple Tree that comes to us from the Netherlands. It was introduced by Simeon Gottfried Albert Doorenbos sometime before 1938. Doorenbos was the Director of the Parks Department at The Hague from 1927 until 1957, although his service was interrupted for a time. The Nazis removed him from his post because he refused to tear out trees and shrubs so they could install a missile launch pad. Many of these older Crabapple Trees have been superseded by newer varieties, but Profusion has had what it takes to survive. Its rich raspberry-pink blooms and disease resistance have assured it a place in the Crabapple Hall of Fame.
How to use Profusion Flowering Crabapple in the landscape?
Most Crabapple Trees aren’t noted for having particularly good fall foliage, but Profusion is an exception. Its leaves have been known to turn a mix of scarlet, orange, and yellow in autumn. Plant your Profusion as a specimen tree in your landscape, in a wildlife garden, or in a grove.
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zone: 4-8
How To Plant Profusion Flowering Crabapple
Like all Crabapple Trees, Profusion prefers a sunny aspect, and a site with good air circulation will help cut down on the risk of disease. The soil should be well drained, but this tree isn’t too fussy about soil type—it will even grow in clay, as long as it doesn’t hold too much water.
How To Water
Immediately after planting, water your new tree deeply, thoroughly, and slowly to ensure that your tree's roots are able to absorb the water. Continue watering this way for the first growing season, every three to four days. Your Profusion Crabapple will be moderately drought tolerant when established.
How To Fertilize
When planting, we recommend that you use the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to ensure you tree has the nutrients it needs to establish itself. Crabapples respond well to annual feeding, so supply nutrients with a good, complete fertilizer such as our Elements™ Organic Fertilizer for optimal performance. Apply in spring and fall for at least the first three years in the ground.
How To Prune
The best time to prune your Profusion Crabapple is in late winter. Prune to remove any crossed branching, damaged, or dead branches. Additionally, remove any suckers you may see forming as these will syphon the nutrients your tree needs to thrive.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
