Why plant Red Jewel™ Flowering Crabapple?

Red Jewel™ Crabapple is a delightful small ornamental tree you can depend on for scads of ruby-red fruits to brighten the darkest winter days. This time-tested Crab tree consistently sets generous crops of fruit that cling to the branches well into the winter, decorating the tree and your landscape with pretty jewel-tone ornaments. If other food sources are available, birds may even leave the little crabapples alone almost until the cycle begins again in spring with sparkling white flowers galore.

Red Jewel™ Crabapple was a product of the Cole Nursery Company of Circleville, Ohio, near Columbus. Cole Nursery was a power player in the nursery industry in its day, but is now defunct. They’re best remembered for their Honeylocust selections that still corner that market: ‘Imperial,’ ‘Skyline,’ and ‘Sunburst.’ Red Jewel™ Crab was hybridized by the company’s owner, Bill Collins, in 1971. It’s still a popular choice. It has good resistance to the diseases that affect Crabapples, and it has the BEST fruit retention of any Crab you can buy.

How to use Red Jewel™ Flowering Crabapple in the landscape?

This dapper little flowering tree makes a worthy addition to your wildlife-friendly garden. The fragrant white flowers keep honeybees and other pollinators busy in spring, and if Red Jewel's™ crabapples are ignored by winter-resident birds, then migrating songbirds returning North will gladly eat them up. Adaptable and easy to grow, Red Jewel™ is a smart choice for city garden and performs well in clay soil (provided there is good drainage). It's small enough to plant under power lines, too.

How To Plant Red Jewel™ Flowering Crabapple

Flowering Crabapples grow well in a wide range of soil conditions and should be planted in a sunny area of your yard; they can tolerate very light shade as well.

How To Water

As with all trees, keep your newly planted Crabapple watered. Water slowly, deeply, and thoroughly every three to four days for the first growing season. This will ensure your tree has the water it needs to establish itself. Don’t keep the soil too wet, however, moist soil is fine.

How To Fertilize

Crabapples like fertilizer, the more you give them – the more they grow. When planting, apply the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to ensure your tree has the nutrients it needs to get settled. Once a year apply a simple tree fertilizer during fall to help promote new growth and flowers for the following season.

How To Prune

Pruning Flowering Crabapples is fairly easy, however, due to the size and structure of the Red Jewel, pruning may not be needed. Prune branches after your Crabapple is done flowering and cut off any suckers around the base of your tree whenever they appear.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
