An early-season blueberry with big, flavorful fruit, crisp spring blooms, and fall foliage that turns warm orange-red
FEATURES:
- Upright, open habit with strong canes that make picking easier and keep the plant looking clean
- Early-season producer with large blueberries that ripen at the start of summer for that first “we did it” harvest
- Sweet, classic blueberry flavor with a bright finish, perfect for fresh eating right off the stem
- Spring brings clusters of white, bell-shaped blooms that draw pollinators in and help set fruit
- Medium to dark green summer foliage creates a lush, edible landscape look
- Fall color shifts into orange to red tones for a showy end-of-season display
- Hand Selected; Fresh from the Grower
- Ships on our trucks because of the size of the tree – does not fit in a box
Bower & Branch Landscape Design Tip:
Treat Spartan like a flowering shrub that just happens to produce dessert, and plant it in a gentle drift with a clean mulch line underneath, then layer low evergreens or soft perennials in front so the blueberries become a lush green backdrop in summer and a glowing orange-red accent in fall; if you add a second variety nearby for cross-pollination, place it close enough that bees can bounce between plants easily, and you’ll be rewarded with a harvest that feels a little bit like winning.

- Hardiness Zone: 4-7

Why plant Spartan Highbush Blueberry?
Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean kale and rice cakes. Some foods, like blueberries, are nutritious AND delicious! Spartan is a special selection of Highbush Blueberry that has all of the good stuff that gives blueberries their “superfood” status. High in fiber, vitamin C, and vitamin K, its fruit is also low in calories. Many studies indicate that blueberries can aid in fighting heart disease and cancer, too. At the same time, Spartan blueberries receive some of the highest marks for flavor. When you grow them yourself, the berries seem even sweeter! So many of the plants we grow for food come from distant places. The Highbush Blueberry is a homegrown American native. It grows in the wild from Maine all the way to Florida, ranging westward to Minnesota and Louisiana. Over the years, plant breeders have worked to improve the size, flavor, and quantity of its berries. Spartan is an introduction that stands out for the large size of its fruit, its productivity, and its incomparable flavor. The big bunches of berries hang off the stems like grapes. This is a rather large-growing Blueberry with strong, sturdy branches.
How to use Spartan Highbush Blueberry in the landscape?
Take the time to appreciate Spartan Highbush Blueberry’s exquisite flowers in the spring. The dainty white blossoms, shaped like tiny, upside-down urns, make a pleasing show. You’ll also enjoy the glowing orange and yellow color that Spartan’s foliage takes on in the fall. A delightful Accent with or without fruit!
How To Plant Spartan Highbush Blueberry
Acid soil is key to growing Blueberries successfully. These peat-loving Accents require very low–pH conditions in order to thrive. If your soil isn’t naturally acidic, you may want to grow Spartan Blueberry in a large container or raised bed. Give it all-day sun if possible and use lots of organic matter—both as a soil amendment and as mulch. Water weekly if no rain falls. Spartan Blueberry is not self-pollinating; you’ll need to plant another variety of Highbush Blueberry nearby so they can pollinate each other.
