Why Plant Spilled Wine® Weigela?

Put a bottle of your favorite Merlot next to this spirit, and it may just blend right into that deep purple foliage! Proven Winners® Color Choice® Spilled Wine® Weigela is adorned with color even when it's not in bloom! The dense plum leaves add to your garden color palette as bursts of fuchsia blooms trumpet open from spring to summer. The lavish flowers catch all the attention of the hummingbirds who stop in throughout the day for a quick sip from the buttery yellow centers. As the summer heat kicks up, the bold foliage gets darker and darker, making the flowers pop even brighter! Proven Winners® Color Choice® Spilled Wine® Weigela pointy leaves stand out in the fall with their burgundy color transformation.

Weigela is one of many popular American landscape plants that originally came from Japan. It was introduced to the West in 1860 and has been a reliable and colorful favorite since at least your great-grandparents’ time. These older forms often grow to be big and bulky, but a flurry of Weigela breeding in recent decades has produced a wealth of smaller versions, and people are falling in love with this classic plant all over again.

How to use Spilled Wine® Weigela in the landscape?

This deciduous shrub grows wider than it is tall, give it the perfect home in your garden borders, lined walkways, and in pots throughout your deck. If you have a summer party and someone spills the wine, no worries!

How To Plant Spilled Wine® Weigela

Proven Winners® Color Choice® Spilled Wine® Weigela is undemanding and easy for beginning gardeners to grow. Just follow these steps. Plant it in full sun where summers don’t get too hot; in very warm climates, afternoon shade may be necessary. Soil type doesn’t really matter, but it must drain well. Water weekly during the growing season if no rain falls. Growth will be best in cool-summer climates.

How To Water

Keep your soil moist and well drained, Weigela's water needs are average.

How To Fertilize

Apply our Elements Starter Plant Food in granular form in early spring if desired.

How To Prune

You probably won’t need to prune Spilled Wine® Weigela much, but if you do want to shape it up, do so immediately after blooming is done to avoid cutting off flower buds.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
