How To Plant Summer Fun Variegated Japanese Dogwood
If you're looking to plant the Summer Fun Dogwood in your garden, here are a few tips to get you started. Dogwood trees offer adaptability to most soil types, but do best in moist well draining sites - they don't like to have 'wet feet'! The Summer Fun Dogwood can thrive in full sun, however, over the years we have noticed that when given even partial shade throughout the day, the quality of the Summer Fun's leaves tend to have a healthier look to them.
How To Water
So you've planted a Summer Fun Dogwood and are looking for the proper methods to care for it, well here at Bower & Branch we are here to help! Dogwood trees do enjoy a good drink and grow best in moist soils. Achieve this by watering deeply, soaking several inches deep at least once a week. Remember to always check local weather conditions and apply water when necessary during hotter, more dry periods. If you are wondering if you should water your Summer Fun Dogwood, a simple way to check is by digging into the soil with your finger and checking how moist the soil is. If the soil is dry, apply water - if it's damp hold off a day and check again the next day!
How To Fertilize
When looking to feed your Summer Fun Dogwood, it all comes down to timing. For the best results, we have noticed that keeping a set schedule for feeding is the most helpful and beneficial for a young tree. We believe fertilizing your tree in early spring will give all the added nutrients needed to have the best growing season possible. For an added measure, you should consider feeding again after three months - this will ensure that your tree is getting the sustenance required for optimal growth.
How To Prune
Now, you have spent the season admiring your wonderful Summer Fun Dogwood, however summer is coming to an end. Something to consider (for any tree!) is the process of pruning. When and how to achieve this feat is nothing to fret about! When looking to provide maintenance to your Summer Fun Dogwood, it's best to do so in late fall or during the winter months when the trees are dormant, at a time when you can easily see branching and structure.
Normally, Dogwoods naturally keep a decent growth habit, meaning they only require a good haircut with some shaving on the sides. To do this, remove any dead or damaged branches - this should be the extent of the pruning needed for your tree! If you see fit to remove branches to shape the tree, call a Plant Whisperer today to gain any extra tips or to ensure that you are making the proper cuts needed for the health of your tree.
It is important to remember when pruning your Summer Fun that this Dogwood, like all Dogwoods, set flower buds through the late summer and fall for the following spring. So, any pruning through dormancy should be kept to a minimum at that time of year. You can also consider providing some selective pruning right after flowering time to avoid removing flower buds.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
