Why plant Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea?

Providing one of the most spectacular summer color rides, the Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea produces blooms that take you on a thrilling journey all season long! The large blooms first open to a lime-green color - not unlike the newly returned lime Skittle! They then transition to hot pink before settling nicely into sweet shade of red. Keep in mind that while the pinks and reds appear, the green remains - creating a gorgeous bicolor swirling bloom to dazzle all summer long! The extra large, deep green leaves turn a bright orange with hints of red and yellow, extending the season of interest past when the blooms have faded! This is one ride you don't want to miss - plant your Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea today and enjoy the ride!

Native to China and Japan, the Hydrangea macrophylla was introduced to Europe and America in the 1800s and has since grown in popularity. The Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea comes to us from The Netherlands, specifically, Horteve Breeding and their head breeder, Cornelius Pieter Eveleens. Corneluis took two varieties of his own hydrangeas and crossed them, collecting the seed when ready. From there, he waited patiently to see the fruits of his labor until he noticed a standout in the bunch. In 2016, the Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea was officially patented and trademarked and has been taking the public on a wild ride since!

How to use Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea in the landscape?

With its sturdy stems, the Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea is an excellent addition to your cut flower garden! It also creates a wonderful low hedge or foundation plant due to its rounded habit. Or simply plant it near your back patio or pool - somewhere you'll be able to enjoy the sensational swirling colors all season long!

Planting Zones

Hardiness Zone: 5-8

How To Plant Tilt-A-Swirl® Bigleaf Hydrangea

Tilt-A-Swirl® Big Leaf Hydrangea grow best when they get full sun for part of the day and shade the balance of the day. Up north, where the summers are cooler they like full sun for up to six hours each day. As you move south, where the summer sun is more intense, the less direct sun is desired. In Zone 8, consider two hours of full direct sun as ideal.

How To Water

The Tilt-A-Swirl® Big Leaf Hydrangea love consistent moisture and will often have droopy leaves when not watered enough. Deeply water your Hydrangea three times a week to encourage root growth.

How To Fertilize

Fertilizing this Bigleaf is done once a season as the new foliage emerges in the spring, we recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food for that springtime boost!

How To Prune

The Tilt-A-Swirl® Big Leaf Hydrangea blooms on new and old wood - so pruning won't deter flowering. Pruning will encourage a bushier growth habit!
