Why Plant Twisted Brilliance Arborvitae Spiral Topiary?
Arborvitae means “Tree of Life,” referencing a story which goes back to the sixteenth century. In 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier and his crew were stuck in what is now Quebec for the winter and were starting to die of scurvy (caused by vitamin C deficiency). They were saved only when the local Iroquois people gave them some Arborvitae tea. (We’ll stick to orange juice!) Twisted Brilliance is a selection of Eastern Arborvitae, the same species that saved Cartier’s men. It was discovered in 1970 at Sheridan Nurseries in Canada and was originally named DeGroot’s Spire, after the worker who found it. Now let’s take a leap into the future and talk about how this Arb is flaunted today. Rocking its feathery, rich green foliage year-round makes this tree a perfect specimen for creating works of art. Here we have a wonderfully crafted spiral shape adding elegant and eye-catching designs to any landscape!

How To Plant Twisted Brilliance Arborvitae Spiral Topiary
The method in which you would like to plant your Twisted Brilliance Spiral Topiary is up to you. If you so choose to grow your topiary via container there are a few things you should know. As the tree gets older and the root mass continues to grow, you will want to repot into a larger container - this should take place about every two years. Doing so will allow your Topiary to continue to receive the proper amount of water and nutrients needed to thrive. When planting Topiary in the ground, follow the planting instructions in our online planting guide to ensure proper planting methods.
How To Water
After receiving your Twisted Brilliance Arborvitae Spiral Topiary, it's time to consider the process of watering. If you choose to plant your Twisted Brilliance Topiary in the ground, a normal watering schedule of no less than twice a week is recommended until established. On the other hand, if you choose to keep your Spiral Topiary in a container, we recommend watering two to three times a week. Depending on location, you may lessen the amount of water to once a week for container grown trees during the winter months. It would be wise to also keep an eye on local weather conditions and water accordingly during periods of high heat or drought.
How To Fertilize
When it comes to fertilizing your Twisted Brilliance Arborvitae Spiral Topiary, we recommend utilizing our all natural fertilizer twice a year. First, in spring before the push of new growth and again in fall, to ensure a healthy growing period, and greater overwintering success. Adjust the amount of fertilizer you use depending on the location. Container grown Topiary will require a more calculated amount of fertilizer compared to a Topiary piece planted in the ground, following the quantities listed on our Elements® Starter Plant Food.
How To Prune
Don't let the process of pruning your Twisted Brilliance Arborvitae Spiral Topiary overwhelm you - we've got you covered! When first purchased, your Spiral Topiary will have been properly sheared before leaving the growers location. This gives you some time to admire the work, and see how the shape should be maintained. As a blanket statement, you should plan to shear your Topiary at least twice a year - once in late spring after the initial flush of new foliage, then again in early fall given the time it had to grow out. Now, you may prune up to three times a year if you plan on keeping it well groomed, however this is not a requirement. Starting from the bottom with a pair of shears lightly trim each globe, following the shape provided. Repeat this process for each globe till finished. Using smaller pruners after the initial trim will help get into those tight spaces making it easier to maintain the Spiral shape.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
