Growing only a few inches a year and maturing at around 6 feet tall, Verdoni stays neat and tidy and will never get out of control. Verdoni is a form of Hinoki Cypress, a tree native to Japan. In the wild, Hinoki trees can reach a towering 100 feet or more, and in Japan their fragrant, high-quality lumber is used for constructing special buildings like shrines and temples. In Japan’s Kiso Valley near the heart of the country, Hinoki Cypress was fiercely guarded in feudal times. It was considered one of the “Five Sacred Trees of Kiso,” and the punishment for cutting one down was execution. The Verdoni variety emerged from Rogers Nursery of England in 1966. From a crop of plain green Hinoki Cypresses called ‘Nana Gracilis’ appeared this one dwarf yellow nonconformist that has been cherished ever since.
