Why plant Verdoni Dwarf Gold Hinoki?

Verdoni Hinoki Cypress is a charming, petite evergreen tree with lacy golden foliage that will bring a ray of sunshine to your garden even in the depths of winter. Pop this little sweetie into one of the landscape beds in your entryway garden, patio area, or courtyard, and this cheerful focal point will lift your spirits all year long! It looks particularly sharp near stone walls or paths, next to water features, or in Asian-inspired gardens with other conifers, bamboo, or Japanese Maples. Growing only a few inches a year and maturing at around 6 feet tall, Verdoni stays neat and tidy and will never get out of control. Verdoni is a form of Hinoki Cypress, a tree native to Japan. In the wild, Hinoki trees can reach a towering 100 feet or more, and in Japan their fragrant, high-quality lumber is used for constructing special buildings like shrines and temples. In Japan’s Kiso Valley near the heart of the country, Hinoki Cypress was fiercely guarded in feudal times. It was considered one of the “Five Sacred Trees of Kiso,” and the punishment for cutting one down was execution. The Verdoni variety emerged from Rogers Nursery of England in 1966. From a crop of plain green Hinoki Cypresses called ‘Nana Gracilis’ appeared this one dwarf yellow nonconformist that has been cherished ever since.

How to use Verdoni Dwarf Gold Hinoki in the landscape?

With its wavy, gold-tipped foliage and slightly irregular pyramidal habit, Verdoni Hinoki Cypress has a sculptural quality like a work of fine art. Unlike a museum piece, however, this is one masterpiece you can touch! Its feathery fronds are as soft and strokable as they look, too.

How To Plant Verdoni Dwarf Gold Hinoki

Site Verdoni Hinoki Cypress carefully in an area where it will receive morning sun with light shade in the afternoon and won’t be subjected to strong winds. This choice specimen tree needs moist soil, though it won’t last long in waterlogged conditions, so make sure drainage is adequate. With a compact size even at maturity, Verdoni makes a great container plant for the patio. Keep in mind that trees in pots are never as cold-hardy as they are when planted in the ground. Trees are also more susceptible to over- and under-watering in containers than they are in the landscape.

Frequently Asked Questions

This conifer does not produce showy blooms. It may form small cones, but it’s grown for evergreen golden foliage, dense texture, and compact form.

Yes. Verdoni is a dwarf Hinoki selected for a compact, dense habit, making it a great option for small landscapes, courtyard beds, and tight foundation plantings.

Very little. Prune selectively in late winter to remove dead or damaged growth if needed. Avoid heavy shearing so the natural layered texture and compact outline remain the feature.
