Why plant Well's Special Hinoki?
Bring a touch of class to your front entryway, foundation plantings, or patio area with an elegant Well's Special Hinoki Cypress. This exquisite sculptural evergreen speaks the language of trees to convey to your guests (in an unboastful way) that you appreciate the finer things. With dense, wavy, deep green foliage and a slim silhouette, it will look stylish in any of the formal planting beds around your home. It rarely needs pruning, yet it will have an impeccable appearance year-round. You will be pleased to see your Well's Special Hinoki Tree growing more impressive each year, while knowing that this long-lived beauty is also adding value to your property.
Hinoki Cypress is a tree of great distinction that has been grown in Japan, where it is native, for thousands of years. When Japan finally opened its borders in the 1850s, the rest of the world quickly came to love this enchanting tree as well. New forms have spontaneously sprung up wherever Hinokis are grown. This selection arose in the United States, but its exact origins aren’t quite clear. Well's Select Hinoki Cypress was originally thought to have emerged from Wells Nursery in Mt. Vernon, Washington, but earlier records indicate it actually came from Mitsch Nursery in Aurora, Oregon around 1977.
How to use Well's Special Hinoki in the landscape?
A must for Asian-inspired gardens, Wells Special Hinoki Cypress also brings cool sophistication to many other types of landscapes, from hip, contemporary urban lots to well-groomed suburban living spaces to elegant country estates. This “little black dress” of the tree world is ready to step into any formal occasion and shine!
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zone: 5-8
How To Plant Well's Special Hinoki
Hinoki Cypress appreciates the relatively mild climate of its Japanese homeland, and Wells Special is no exception, though careful siting will bring success in less than optimal situations. High filtered shade or morning sun with protection from searing afternoon heat is ideal. Shelter from subfreezing winter wind will also help it emerge from rough winters unscathed. Mulch well to moderate temperatures in the root zone. Diseases and pests rarely attack Wells Special Hinoki Cypress.
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Drainage must be adequate to assure that this tree never has to endure having “wet feet.” Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant Food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. If planting in the fall, use Elements Fertilizer while planting and start your regular annual fertilizing the following fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established as it gives your tree the nutrients it needs to produce lush new growth for the following spring.
How To Prune
It's best to prune your Well's Special in the summer months - prune back any dead branches. However, due to the slow growth habit, pruning may not be needed.

Shipping Delays:
From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
