Why plant White Shield Osage Orange?
The White Shield Osage Orange was named after the White Shield creek in Oklahoma where the original tree was discovered. A fun fact about the Osage Orange: back in the day, before the invention of barbed wire, other cultivars of this species (which have nasty thorns) were planted as a natural fence as cattle deterrents in the Midwest! Also, the wood of this tree is very durable and still utilized to make fence posts to this day. Offering heat and drought tolerance, the White Shield Osage Orange has two more benefits for the everyday homeowner and that is the lack of fruit (no mess) as well as being thornless. This tree offers dark green glossy foliage that transitions to yellow hues come fall. Growing to mature heights and widths of 35’, this tough Midwest native grows into a wonderful shade tree addition to any landscape!
How to use White Shield Osage Orange in the landscape?
When looking into the White Shield Osage Orange, two things stand out compared to other varieties: no thorns and no fruit! Not to worry, you don't want that fruit anyway! Not only are they the size of softballs, they are inedible, and create a mess when they drop - so you luck out! An advantage of the White Shield Osage Orange is the tenacity to thrive in almost any condition it finds itself in. These trees can be utilized as a shade tree, hedge, or windbreak. Their adaptability gives you the option to plant one in almost any location available!

How To Plant White Shield Osage Orange
White Shield Osage Orange is an incredibly tough native tree. Offering tolerance to both heat and drought, adaptability to most well-draining soil types, as well as growing in full sun or partial shade, this tree does well in proving it’s toughness. To maintain health and proper growth of your White Shield Osage Orange, prune regularly, water when necessary until established, and, when first planted, make sure to protect the trunk during maintenance (like pruning and mowing) so as to not damage the tree.
How To Water
You have just planted your very own White Shield Osage Orange and now it's time to consider watering. After the planting and initial deep watering, we recommend keeping a steady watering schedule to promote the best growth possible. Achieve this by watering at least twice weekly until established. Once established, White Shield Osage Orange offers tolerance to drought, however, watering every once in a while won't hurt. Lastly, keep an eye on local weather patterns and water accordingly during periods of hotter more dry weather.
How To Fertilize
Looking for information on feeding your White Shield Osage Orange? We've got your back! When first planting, we recommend using our Elements Starter Plant Food by mixing a portion of the plant food into the planting site. When the tree is placed, apply fertilizer as a top dressing and water accordingly. A rule of thumb we live by here at Bower & Branch is to fertilize in spring or fall, if the tree is planted in fall then fertilizing in spring would be your next step and vice versa.
How To Prune
It's time to consider pruning your White Shield Osage Orange and you're not sure where to start, but we've got you covered! We have found that the best time to prune for most trees, including this one, is in late winter or early spring before the push of new growth. Start by pruning away any dead or broken branches, this will promote healthy growth and provide air circulation. Over time, you may also prune to maintain the shape you desire however, that is not required.

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
