      Why plant Winter Gem Boxwood?

For the more formal landscape beds around your home, there is perhaps no finer Finishing Touch than Winter Gem Korean Boxwood. This luxe evergreen will bring classic beauty to your borders not only in winter, but throughout the year. Deep green foliage persists to provide excellent, dense coverage even in the depths of winter. As an excellent small hedge, the Winter Gem Boxwood provides a formal border to landscapes while being low maintenance and deer resistant. A useful plant and a joy to behold all year-round!

In Europe, English Boxwoods have been used in formal gardens for centuries. Mansions, castles, and simple but meticulously maintained homes in countries such as England, France, Germany, and Italy have made use of these valuable plants. They provide a tidy frame for beds of colorful flowers, bring greenery into the depths of winter, and help to separate different garden “rooms” in the landscape. In the U.S., many want to imitate this timeless garden style, but in the colder parts of the country, English Boxwood isn’t hardy. Winter Gem Korean Boxwood to the rescue! It can tolerate temperatures down to -20ºF when established.

How to use Winter Gem Boxwood in the landscape?

Plant a matching pair on either side of a bench, gate, arch, or path to create a balanced composition. Shear annually to accentuate that perfect globe shape. You can also plant Winter Gem in rows to make low hedges that will form strong lines in your garden and help you define space.

How To Plant Winter Gem Boxwood

Good drainage is essential when growing Winter Gem Boxwood. It will tolerate many types of soil and will even grow in clay, but the soil must drain well or the plant may fall prey to root rot diseases. This is a shallow-rooting plant, so mulch well to keep the root zone cool and moist (but not wet). Winter Gem grows splendidly in both sun and in a quite a bit of shade. The foliage does have a tendency to turn bronzy orange when exposed to icy winter winds, however, so give the plant a sheltered site if winters are severe in your area. Deer rarely browse boxwoods, we are happy to report.

      How To Water

After planting, be sure to give your Winter Gem Boxwoods a deep watering, this will help encourage the roots to grow properly. You should water this way twice a week for the first growing season. After they are established, they will be drought tolerant.

      How To Fertilize

We recommend applying the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food for the first three years (at least!) in spring to be sure your Winter Gems have all they need to flourish in your landscape!

      How To Prune

Winter Gem Boxwood naturally assumes a dense globe shape, but you can shear it to produce an even more polished appearance if you like. A light trim once or twice a year will keep it looking picture-perfect.
