Why Plant Armstrong Gold® Columnar Red Maple?
Impeccable! The Armstrong Gold® Columnar Red Maple will rise like a spire in your landscape, creating a slim green column of dense foliage. Elegant and formal in appearance, this tree looks as though it's been sheared into a tight elliptical shape, despite the fact that your pruners have never touched it. Armstrong Gold® has rich green foliage that remains clean and healthy all season, and when nights turn frosty, the fireworks begin. Armstrong Gold® leaves don't really turn gold like the name says, but more of a warm golden color. Try to site this tree where the morning or afternoon sun will filter through the autumn leaves, and it will glow like a candle flame.
Red Maple is a common forest tree throughout the eastern U.S., and many selections of this adaptable species have been made for landscapes. The original Armstrong Red Maple was discovered by Newton Armstrong of Windsor, Ohio, in 1947. Armstrong Gold® was developed by Keith Warren of J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Boring, Oregon. In 1995, Warren raised 250 seedlings from an Armstrong Maple Tree in hopes of creating an improved Armstrong. Two years later, he selected out the largest 162 trees. In 1999, he chose the three trees with the narrowest habits, and finally, he chose the overall winner. When Warren patented the new tree, it was 17 years old and 34 feet tall, but only 7 1/2 feet wide.
How to use Armstrong Gold® Columnar Red Maple in the landscape?
Armstrong Gold® Red Maple is perfect for slipping into a skinny side yard or a tight corner where another tree would outgrow its space. It makes a dramatic allée, too, when used to line a path, street, or driveway.
Planting Zones
Hardiness Zones: 4-8
How To Plant Armstrong Gold® Columnar Red Maple
Plant your Armstrong Gold® Red Maple in a sunny site for the densest growth and most intense fall color. This plant is not too fussy about soils, though moist, well-drained soils will yield the best results. Like all Red Maples, Armstrong Gold® is a surface-rooting tree, so mulch it well and try to avoid disturbing the root zone.
How To Water
Water twice weekly for the first 3-5 weeks; then water weekly for the remainder of the year until winter. When you water, water very slowly and very thoroughly. The water needs to reach to the bottom of the root ball and that takes time. Watering needs may be altered due to extreme weather conditions.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
How To Prune
Red Maples in general don’t need a lot of attention when it comes to pruning and no major pests or diseases bother this low-maintenance tree.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
