Why Plant Blue Ice Cypress?

Prepare to be dazzled. Blue Ice Cypress is probably the frostiest, brightest, bluest tree you’ll ever see. This uncommon conifer is maybe even a little more striking than Blue Spruce—and it doesn’t have the prickles! Blue Ice grows much more quickly than Blue Spruce, too, making it a good choice for those who want that classic blue pyramidal evergreen look, but don’t want to wait so long for their specimen to fill out. Give it full sun and excellent drainage, and Blue Ice Cypress will give your landscape that WOW factor in no time. Scattered throughout the Southwestern United States and into Mexico are populations of this gorgeous evergreen everblue species, the Arizona Cypress.  They’re tenacious trees, unfazed by searing heat and strong winds, and they can handle icy-cold winters, too.  Wildfires are even their friend, as the seeds for the next generation are released only by fire.  This extra-blue selection was discovered in New Zealand, of all places.  It was found by the world-famous (in horticultural circles anyway) Duncan and Davies Nursery in 1960, finally making its way into commerce in 1984.

How to use Blue Ice Cypress in the landscape?

Give Blue Ice Cypress room to grow. We know it looks skinny as a youngster, but it will grow fast. If you want to give it a tighter shape and control the size a bit, this tree does accept shearing. However, you must start early—don’t wait until the tree is already too big for the space.

How To Plant Blue Ice Cypress

Remember where this tree came from originally, and you’ll know what it wants. A native of the Southwest, it needs good drainage and minimal water.  You may have to keep it staked the first year, but after it sinks some roots into the ground, it will be able to withstand a windy site without support.  It will grow quickly—two feet a year is not uncommon!  Blue Ice has a pungent Christmas tree smell that deer don’t seem to like.  It rarely has any trouble from insects or disease, either.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
