Why Plant Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia?

When they say "April showers bring May flowers" they weren't kidding! Delighting both the sense of sight and smell, you won't want to miss what the Claudia Wannamaker Magnolia has to offer. So let's jump right in! The Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia is known for providing a straight trunk, cone like canopy and a deliciously fragrant bloom. With dense foliage of leather like evergreen leaves that grow to 5-10 inches long, aromatic lovely white flowers around 8 inches across—this tree is a must have! The flowers of the Claudia Wannamaker are roughly 8" across, displaying 6 petals with a cup like shape at the end. Opening early morning and closing that night, we notice the fall of the stamens before the flower reopens. After this process the flowers turn brown and disintegrate, allowing the process to start all over through summer and into fall. The flowers produce cone-like seed pods containing rather large red seeds that drop come the end of the season.

The Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia was actually named after a one Claudia Wannamaker who in 1945 purchased a skinny 18" tree from a mail order nursery. Her cousin John F. Brailsford Sr. was the one who cultivated this Southern Magnolia and introduced it to the trade in 1956.

How To Plant Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia

Dependable and resilient the Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia is capable of growing in many different soil types from sandy to clay. However, this tree does better with moist soils. The Claudia Wannamaker Southern Magnolia is relatively easy to grow. We recommend picking a nice sunny location with well draining soil.

How To Water

When first planted, we recommend for the first 3-5 weeks you water twice weekly until winter. While watering, we advise you to be slow and through as to not cause stress. Be cautious of extreme weather and take precaution that your tree stands the test of time.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

To have a thriving Magnolia, you do not have to prune; however, if you do chose to do so, during their winter dormancy would be best.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
