Why Plant Crimson King Norway Maple?

Crimson King Norway Maple is a regal tree that commands attention! With a canopy of bold burgundy foliage that rises to 40 feet in height and nearly as wide, it’s hard to miss! Plant this colorful Maple tree anywhere you want a shady refuge from the hot summer sun, or use it as a sharp color contrast to light-colored walls or fences, or a white-flowering tree like Kousa Dogwood. No green thumb required with this one, either! Crimson King Maple will give your landscape a big splash of color, but ask for little in return.

Norway Maple is a sturdy, adaptable tree with a natural distribution stretching from France to Iran. Red-leaved forms have been known for some time; ‘Schwedleri,’ which has red leaves in spring, but green leaves in summer, dates back to 1869. Crimson King is a superior seedling of Schwedleri that was developed in a Belgian nursery called Gebroeders Tips (“Tips Brothers”?) in 1937. It made its way across the pond in 1948 and was given one of the earliest plant patents awarded—#735 (we are now closing in on #25,000).

How to use Crimson King Norway Maple in the landscape?

Who can resist this royal ruler? Crimson King Maples are easy-to-grow, pest-free and magnificent shade trees to boot. Large purple leaves cover this noble specimen and maintain their royal color throughout summer, turning a bronzy-red in fall. Be Aware! This regal individual requires ample space to spread its imperial roots. With a tree so glorious - you'll be saying "Yes, your Majesty!" to this one.

How To Plant Crimson King Norway Maple

An easy-to-grow tree, the Crimson King Maple is a variety of the Norway Maple. This variety has deep purple foliage - to keep that deep purple color, it needs to be planted in sunny locations. Crimson Kings are slow growers compared to the Red Maples but it tolerates most of the same soil conditions with one exception…he doesn’t like to get his “feet” wet. So constantly wet soils just won’t do! There are no serious pest or disease problems for Crimson King Maples although the tree has a minor flaw. Crimson King Maples develop surface roots. As the tree matures, roots seem to poke out of the ground and it looks as if the roots are actually growing on the surface of the ground instead of underground. The only problem with surface roots is that they make it difficult for anything else to grow under the tree. A great place for shaded container gardening!

How To Water

During its formative years, your Crimson Maple will require weekly watering. Even as it matures, your tree will still need plenty of water during the summer months.

How To Fertilize

When planting, use Elements Starter Plant Food on your new Maple. For ongoing care, you should fertilize in spring to give your tree a healthy boost! Additionally, you should fertilize in fall as your tree begins to go dormant for the season.

How To Prune

Not much pruning work required for this very low maintenance tree! Prune as needed late spring through early summer but make sure you do not prune after midsummer. Remember to not prune maples in early spring, the sap can bleed excessively.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
