Why Plant D.D. Blanchard Southern Magnolia?

Not the tallest, but not the smallest either! The D.D. Blanchard Southern Magnolia has many of the same qualities as its family members, yet does yield some differences. Simply called just "Blanchard", this Southern Magnolia offers similar structure to other Magnolias growing a fairly straight trunk with a pyramidal or rounded crown. This species includes the well known broadleaf evergreen look being encompassed in its large dark green foliage with rusty orange undersides. Same as other varieties of Magnolia, the Blanchard also offers lavish perfume smelling flowers in early summer. These blooms are a showy, creamy white color that are almost unbelievable in size. However, this particular type does have a more staggered bloom compared to others in its family. When the blooms end, cone like fruiting clusters bearing red seeds appear, calling on the songbirds of the area to feast and delight any landscape with their beauty and song.

Hailing from North Carolina, the D.D. Blanchard Southern Magnolia was discovered in the 1960's growing in a backyard in Wallace, North Carolina. Later cultivated by Robbins Nursery.

How to use D.D. Blanchard Southern Magnolia in the landscape?

Bearing large creamy white flowers, along with cone like red seeds, this tree has a lot to offer. Visually stunning during the blooming season, this tree will look amazing no matter where you put it. Depending on how you decide to keep your Magnolia, whether it be tree form with the trunk showing or grown from the ground up it will always provide an eye catching moment.

How To Plant D.D. Blanchard Southern Magnolia

These wonderful trees are able to withstand a prune, creating a higher canopy or may also be left to grow on its own, from the ground reaching high into the sky. It can easily be grown to stand alone or create a barricade between you and something undesirable.

How To Water

When first planted, we recommend for the first 3-5 weeks you water twice weekly until winter. While watering, we advise you to be slow and through as to not cause stress. Be cautious of extreme weather and take precaution that your tree stands the test of time.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

How To Prune

To have a thriving Magnolia, you do not have to prune; however, if you do chose to do so, during their winter dormancy would be best.

Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
