Why Plant Dragon's Eye Pine?
Dragon Eye Pine is a cool, funky evergreen tree with lots of color and loads of character. Who needs flowers? This colorful tree will light up your landscape year-round with its long, soft, yellow-banded Pine needles and flaky, coppery-orange bark. A must-have conifer in any Asian-inspired garden, this picturesque specimen tree also looks especially fitting with contemporary homes or in landscapes with a water feature or stonework of any kind. Wherever it’s planted, Dragon Eye Pine will be the focal point of the garden and a source of pride for anyone fortunate enough to own one. Japanese Red Pine is a common tree in its home country—maybe even the most common tree in Japan. It can grow to 100 feet tall on rich soil. It has been a valuable timber tree in the past, the wood durable and rot-resistant enough to be used in building bridges. The resinous wood burns so hot that it is preferred fuel for pottery kilns. Of course, not all Red Pines face such a fate—some are lovingly tended in landscapes! This smaller, variegated rendition has been around since at least 1890.
How to use Dragon's Eye Pine in the landscape?
Now this is one cool evergreen! The long needles are banded in golden yellow to give just a spectacular vision. A very unique specimen plant for your garden for sure! It's indescribable, you just have to see it to believe it!
How To Plant Dragon's Eye Pine
Though Red Pine is an opportunistic species in its homeland, occupying any available space no matter how poor the soil, this specimen form is worthy of the choicest spot in the garden. Let it have a roomy space of its own where it can bask in all-day sun in rich, well-drained soil. It’s a slow grower, increasing gradually in grandeur each year. Its natural asymmetrical growth pattern gives this tree an artistic flair without it being touched by pruners. Even young specimens soon develop a windswept look.

Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.
How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
