Why Plant Fire Star Pinks?

Where’s the fire? In your landscape! Fire Star Pinks covers itself in the most intense crimson-red blooms, you’ll think your garden is ablaze. The vivid blossoms open in abundance in late spring, often reblooming throughout summer and into fall in fiery flushes. When the blooms finally peter out, you’re left with a neat carpet of handsome foliage. The cool blue-green leaves hold on to their good looks throughout the year, making this dapper Spirit a wise choice for high-visibility areas that can’t afford to have an off-season. Use Fire Star Pinks to dress up your sunny entryway, patio, or poolside plantings—or anywhere you want to create some heat!

Pinks are a group of perky Spirits found mostly in Europe and Asia. Although many of them have pink flowers, you might be surprised to learn that that’s not the reason for their name. Pinks get their name from the jagged edges of their petals—the blooms look like they’ve been cut with pinking shears! Fire Star is the result of a long, patient breeding program started by British nurseryman John Whetman. To produce the plant, he let bees pollinate the magnificent Neon Star Pinks, and he raised a crop of seedlings from the marriage (the baby daddy was unknown). Fire Star stood out for its intense color, large flowers, long bloom time, neat habit, and vigorous growth. It was introduced to the U.S. market in 2003.

How to use Fire Star Pinks in the landscape?

A natural with rockwork, Fire Star Pinks is just the thing to top a stone wall. Its frilly red flowers and grassy, blue-green foliage make a pleasing contrast with hardscapes. Planting Fire Star on top of a retaining wall will also bring its lightly fragrant blooms closer to nose level!

How To Plant Fire Star Pinks

Fire Star Pinks is an easy Spirit to grow, provided a few basic needs are met. First, this plant loves full sun. A southern or western exposure will give it the bright light it craves. Second, it requires well-drained soil. No wet feet for this one. Fire Star Pinks has low water needs once established, and it tolerates moderate periods of drought with no ill effects. Shear off the spent flowers to encourage new ones to form. The evergreen plants hold up well through all but the worst winters. If any unsightly foliage appears, remove it prior to new growth in early spring.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
