Why Plant Green Spire Euonymus?

Multi-stemmed and growing with a tight columnar habit, the Green Spire Euonymus is fitting for locations that need a slender component. Dark, glossy green foliage provides interest all year, while in summer, we are graced with small, inconspicuous white flowers. These may not mean much to you, but pollinators will thank you for it! Following the blooms we can expect small pink fruits that ripen in the fall and provide a wonderful feast for local birds. Growing to heights of about 8’ tall and widths spanning about 2’, these shrubs make a perfect addition to those hard to fill locations or as a dynamic privacy hedge!

The Green Spire Euonymus is native to Japan, but how did it find its way to the Americas? In 1978, a group of former U.S. National Arboretum staff collected cuttings from a specimen found near the Araki Shrine on Dogo Island, located in the Oki Islands. Originally named Euonymus Japonicus Benkomasaki, it wasn't until 1991 the name Green Spire was introduced to the shrub we love today.

How To Plant Green Spire Euonymus

The Green Spire Euonymus is partial to locations that offer part shade, however, this shrub will tolerate locations that reside in full sun. When considering soil types, aiming for moist well draining soils will be your best bet. Take some time and read our planting guide located in our blogs for a more in depth step by step process on getting your plants in the ground.

How To Water

Watering your Green Spire Euonymus is quite simple. Water no less than twice a week until established. Once established, this shrub does provide drought tolerance, however, it would be within your best interest and for the health of the plant to water when necessary. Stick your finger in the soil and test to see if it is dry, if so water accordingly. We do recommend keeping an eye on your local weather for periods of inclement weather such as high heat and drought and watering as needed.

How To Fertilize

It's feeding time! This is fairly simple when considering the process for the Green Spire Euonymus as it's not a heavy feeder. If you are planting in the spring, apply fertilizer to the planting site. Next, you may apply fertilizer again in the fall as this will provide much needed nutrients throughout the winter season. Now the next time you will want to feed would be the following fall to continue this process for the life of the plant and enjoy a lively, healthy, shrub!

How To Prune

Once you have enjoyed a season or two of growth, you may start to think that it's time for a trim. This process should take place in early spring, before the push of new growth. There are two methods of pruning: thinning and tip pruning. Thinning is the process of removing older, weaker branches to make way for new stronger branches. Tip pruning is the process of removing just a few inches from the tips of the branches down to a new bud which is where the new growth will continue from. These practices should be done branch by branch in order to maintain a tidy appearance.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
