Why Plant Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea?

Small but mighty, this abundant bloomer will be the hydrangea that keeps giving back to the landscape year after year. Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea is producer of very heavy flower clusters that change from white to pink as they age. The deep green foliage, with the signature oakleaf shape, also puts on its own show changing from the standard green to a beautiful bronze in the fall. Ideal for smaller landscapes, the larger landscapes can also enjoy Munchkin when used as a creative hedge.

Oakleaf Hydrangeas, Hydrangea quercifolia, are native to eastern US and are commonly found in damp woodland. The state wildflower of Alabama, Oakleaf Hydrangea is a favorite amongst people everywhere. Going back in time, there is an old dwarf variety of oakleaf that was named 'Sike's Dwarf,' and the beloved Munchkin stems from that old variety. Seeds were collected from 'Sike's Dwarf' and the US National Arboretum shrub breed program, based out of Tennessee, took those seed to grow. As a result, a medium-sized shrub with gigantic bloom clusters grew and was eventually released to the public in 2010 with the name of 'Munchkin.'

How to use Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea in the landscape?

Picture an oakleaf hydrangea just fun-sized and you'll picture something similar to Munchkin. This petite character packs a punch in a small package. The dense, bushy form is made up of oakleaf-shaped foliage that are leathery on top, and fuzzy on the bottom. Once June arrives, Munchkin will be ablaze with large white flower clusters that will turn to pink and red hues as the shrub ages.

How To Plant Munchkin Oakleaf Hydrangea

Munchkin is a wonder of the hydrangeas, not only for it's petite stature but also for the fact that this small hydrangea can tolerate dryness better than other hydrangeas. Place this cool hydrangea in a location that is sunny with moist, rich soil that is well-draining and watch as the bloom clusters come to life. Pruning is rarely needed, and pests and diseases tend to leave this hydrangea alone.

How To Fertilize

Incorporate Elements Starter Plant food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each late fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.

Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
