Why Plant Pink Princess™ Sargent Flowering Crabapple?

Support your local honeybees with a Pink Princess™ Sargent Crabapple—a pollinator paradise when it opens its profusion of rosy pink blossoms in spring. You’ll do another good deed for wildlife by providing songbirds with hundreds of sweet-tasting crabapple fruits in winter. And all year-round, this gorgeous little ornamental tree will be a feast for the eyes for you as well! When you see its pretty pink flowers, clean foliage, unique spreading habit, and glossy red fruits for yourself, you’ll be as happy as the neighborhood critters that you chose a Pink Princess™ Crabapple for your yard.

In 1873, Harvard grad Charles Sargent became the first Director of the Arnold Arboretum in Boston, Massachusetts. Not content to sit back and let others send him additions to the new arboretum, he traveled the world collecting plants himself. One of his acquisitions was a new (to the West) Crabapple from Japan with a naturally dwarf habit. In the 1980s, J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Oregon used this “Sargent” Crab in hybridizing this selection. Pink Princess has the tidy, dwarf form of Sargent, but soft pink flowers instead of white.

How to use Pink Princess™ Sargent Flowering Crabapple in the landscape?

The perfect “princess” for a smaller garden! The distinct, horizontal branching produces bright rose pink flowers in the spring and red fruit in the fall. It also keeps its red tinted leaves all season long. This lovely flowering tree will attract birds throughout the year. Be sure to plant it as a small specimen tree, along your fence, or as unique hedge option.

How To Plant Pink Princess™ Sargent Flowering Crabapple

Flowering Crabapples grow well in a wide range of soil conditions and should be planted in a sunny area of your yard; they can tolerate very light shade as well. The Pink Princess™ Crabapple is known to have excellent disease resistance, but excellent care will help ward off common Crabapple issues.

How To Water

As with all trees, keep your newly planted Crabapple watered. Do so slowly, deeply, and thoroughly every three to four days for the first growing season. Don’t keep the soil too wet, however, moist soil is fine. As it becomes established, it has some drought tolerance.

How To Fertilize

Crabapples like fertilizer, the more you give them – the more they grow. When planting, apply the Bower & Branch Starter Plant Food to ensure your tree has the nutrients it needs to get settled. Once a year apply a simple tree fertilizer during fall to help promote new growth and flowers for the following season.

How To Prune

Pruning Flowering Crabapples is fairly easy. Prune branches after your Crabapple is done flowering and cut off any suckers around the base of your tree whenever they appear. Although, with the unique growth habit and branching structure, pruning may not be needed.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
