Why Plant Prairie Dream® Paper Birch - clump?

Anyone who has grown up in the North will always have a soft spot in their heart for Paper Birch. To those familiar with it, this hauntingly beautiful tree, with its snow-white bark and fluttery leaves, will stir memories of fishing in clear blue lakes, camping by mountain streams, or hiking through cool Northern forests. Southerners will recognize this tree from landscape calendar photos showing bright white Birch bark trunks against deep green conifers, red and orange Maple leaves, and Paper Birch's own yellow foliage in fall. Prairie Dream® Paper Birch is a new pest-resistant selection of the species that will allow more people to welcome this beloved tree into their home landscapes.

Native Americans once built canoes out of Paper Birch bark, enabling them to navigate Northern lakes and rivers. This striking tree of the North Woods has never been too successful outside of its natural range (which reaches southward only to New Jersey), usually falling prey to the bronze birch borer, which attacks heat and drought stressed trees. Prairie Dream® extends the range a bit. Grown from seed collected in Western North Dakota, it was evaluated for 27 years near Fargo, where it performed beautifully, while remaining borer-free. It was released in 2005.

How to use Prairie Dream® Paper Birch - clump in the landscape?

A dreamboat of a Birch! Prairie Dream® River Birch has exceptional snow-white exfoliating bark with an orange inner-bark - simply spectacular! Dark green foliage during the spring/summer season transforms to a golden yellow in fall. Low maintenance, deer resistant, and resistant to bronze birch borer to boot - a great specimen tree for your home landscape!

How To Plant Prairie Dream® Paper Birch - clump

Paper Birch can handle whatever Old Man Winter can dish out, but summer is another story. Prolonged hot spells can weaken the tree, though Prairie Dream® is tougher than most. If you live north of the Mason-Dixon Line, you should be all right. Don’t plant this tree near surfaces that reflect or radiate heat, like asphalt driveways or the southern side of buildings. Make sure to mulch your tree to keep the roots cool and moist, and water regularly.

How To Prune

Pruning is best done in summer or just after leaf-fall.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
