Why Plant Slash Pine?
Large and in charge! That's right - we're talking about the Slash Pine. Also known as the Swamp Pine, Yellow Slash Pine, as well as the Southern Florida Pine. This majestic tree is capable of reaching upwards of 100' in height with a trunk anywhere from 3-4 feet in diameter. The Slash Pine generously produces long needles arranged in a "broom" like shape. Appealing blue-green in color, the foliage of the Slash Pine lasts year round but does still drop needles periodically throughout the year. A unique quality of this tree is the ability to lose or almost self prune its lower limbs as it grows taller.
The Slash Pine has always had a wide variety of uses and was one of the most important species in Southern Florida back in the day. The timber of the Slash Pine was widely used by pioneers, developers, and industrialist all the same. The reason this tree was so popular is because of its resilience to both rot and termites, as well as being known for the hardest lumber in the world. The Slash Pine had been used in heavy construction for ages building bridges, railroad ties, support beams, as well as making plywood and veneers. With such high demand, unfortunately the Slash Pine had been over-harvested - almost to complete extinction. Nowadays, the Pine Rocklands is home to this endangered species.
How to use Slash Pine in the landscape?
When we are speaking of the Slash Pine, we can not overlook the sheer size of this tree. Although not recommended for smaller plots, we find that the Slash Pine enjoys more naturalized habitats such as parks or other open areas. If the space is available the Slash Pine would make a wonderful specimen.

How To Plant Slash Pine
Slash pines absolutely loves those sun rays! Plant your Pine somewhere in full sun, unlike other pines, the Slash Pine can tolerate soil that is more moist.
How To Water
Water accordingly when first planted; we would suggest once or twice a week until fully established. To make life easier, try using out Elements Watering System.
How To Fertilize
Incorporate Elements Starter Plant Food granular form into the soil when planting. If planting in spring or summer, start fertilizing late fall using Elements Starter Plant food granular form on an annual basis each fall. Continue this for the first three years to get your plant well established.
The Slash Pine is a hungry fellow who actually enjoys a routine fertilization over time when first planted. We recommend in Spring, Summer and Fall.
How To Prune
At a young age, the only pruning needed would be for any branches that may have died off over time. This species tends to drop its lower limbs as it grows taller. Depending on where the tree has been planted, you may want to take the time the lower branches yourself as to not damage any property that may lie underneath.

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
