Why Plant Sugar Tyme® Flowering Crabapple?

A good Flowering Crabapple Tree is hard to beat for year-round beauty and wildlife appeal, and Sugar Tyme™ Crabapple is one of the best. This popular pick will give you sweet eye candy in the form of sugar-white flowers that emerge from cotton-candy-pink buds. The fragrant blooms make for both happy pollinators and a lovely spring picture outside your window. After the bees have done their job, the flowers turn into glossy fruits like Red Hots candies that decorate the branches all winter. Only in spring do the little crabapples become soft and sweet enough for wildlife to enjoy, and songbirds will come to feast upon them.

Sugar Tyme™ is a classic Crabapple Tree that has stood the test of time, due to its abundant flowering, long-lasting fruit display, and its good to excellent disease resistance. It was introduced in 1988 by Jim Zampini of Lake County Nursery in Perry, Ohio, a well-respected nursery that knows its Crabapples and grows them as one of its specialties. Sugar Tyme™ wasn’t discovered there, however. It was a chance seedling found in Haslett, Michigan at the home of Michigan State University professor Milton Baron in 1965. Professor Baron passed away in 2014 at the age of 101, leaving behind a long legacy in the field of landscape architecture, not the least of which was this stellar Crabapple Tree.

How to use Sugar Tyme® Flowering Crabapple in the landscape?

Crabapples are small to medium-sized trees that aren’t known for having a vigorous rate of growth, but Sugar Tyme™ Crab is faster than most. With good soil and regular feeding, it will make a fine, sizable specimen in no time. It also forms a naturally strong branching pattern with little pruning needed, and it holds up well under the ice and snow loads of typical northern winters.

How To Plant Sugar Tyme® Flowering Crabapple

You don’t need much of a green thumb to have great success with the Sugar Tyme™ Crabapple Tree. Just plant it green side up in a sunny spot in soil that drains well and doesn’t stay wet. Although this selection is resistant to the common diseases that can afflict Crabapples, planting it in an area where air flows freely is also a good idea.

How To Water

Sugar Tyme™ will need regular water during the first year or two while it puts roots down and gets established, but it will require less attention after that.

How To Fertilize

Fertilizing the Sugar Tyme® should take place in fall or late winter using our Elements Starter Plant Food.

How To Prune

Trim out any suckers should they appear, and avoid damaging the trunk, as wounds may cause additional suckers to form.

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
