Why Plant Urban Pinnacle® Bur Oak?

A breakthrough! Bur Oak is a magnificent native shade tree—handsome, sturdy, drought tolerant, and a boon to local wildlife. Unfortunately, it’s not a practical choice for many homeowners because it gets so huge. Urban Pinnacle Bur Oak makes this splendid tree much more accessible with its compact, upright habit—it will likely reach only half the width of the typical Bur Oak at maturity! Acorns that are vastly smaller than normal also make for a more landscape-friendly tree. Use Urban Pinnacle as a street tree, a backyard shade tree, a native garden focal point and wildlife sanctuary. Highly recommended!

Native to a large area of the East and Midwest, the majestic Bur Oak is a part of our nation’s natural heritage. It is an iconic tree of farmlands and prairies, where venerable old specimens add their broad, bold silhouettes to otherwise flat, wide open landscapes. Urban Pinnacle Bur Oak was discovered at J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Oregon in 1998 by new tree developer, Keith Warren. Warren evaluated a few thousand Bur Oaks grown from seed at the nursery, searching for trees with superior habits, foliage, disease resistance, growth rate, and fall color. Out of all of those young Bur Oak Trees, Urban Pinnacle was the clear winner!

How to use Urban Pinnacle® Bur Oak in the landscape?

Bur Oak is a supremely tough tree, able to shrug off bitter cold, drought, wind, and poor soils like few other trees can. This gentle giant can even survive in the city if there’s room enough for it to grow. In fact, Bur Oak is a past winner of the Society of Municipal Arborists “Tree of the Year” award for its ability to thrive in challenging urban sites. Urban Pinnacle now makes it easier for city dwellers and city planners to include Bur Oak in their landscapes.

How To Plant Urban Pinnacle® Bur Oak

Urban Pinnacle Bur Oak is a slow-growing tree, but with optimum levels of water and fertilizer, its growth rate can be speeded up a bit. Use the Bower & Branch™ Water Element and our Soil Enhancer and Fertilizer Element to give your new tree exactly what it needs to flourish. Plant Urban Pinnacle Bur Oak in full sun in any type of soil and mulch it with a layer of wood chips or bark. Diseases are no problem with this one, and insects are kept under control by grateful songbirds!

*For Big trees and Shrubs, Size XL and bigger: Review our Seasonal Shipping Timelines and Policy here.

Your trees and plants are grown across the United States at various Bower & Branch Growers. Depending on your location, your plant orders may be shipped from various locations. Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

    Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

    How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
