Why Plant Vanderwolf's Pyramid Limber Pine?

Vanderwolf's Pyramid Limber Pine is a huggably soft native evergreen tree with branches so flexible, you can tie them in knots (but please don't!). This moderately fast-growing specimen tree looks like the ever-popular Eastern White Pine tree, but has bluer needles and stays much smaller, making it easier to integrate into your landscape without overwhelming the space. Plant it within a mixed conifer border to add its unique steely blue color and fine feathery texture to a handsome privacy screen that will dampen noise, block views into your yard, and provide food and shelter to birds and other local wildlife. In winter, you can dress it up with Christmas lights!

Limber Pine calls a vast territory home, from Alberta, Canada through the Rocky Mountain States and into Northern Mexico. It grows at elevations of up to 12,000 feet—to the “treeline,” beyond which no tree is able to grow. An exceedingly long-lived tree, the oldest (in Colorado) is dated at 1,663 years. The selection we offer arose in 1972 from Vermeulen Nursery of New Jersey—the same folks who brought us Royal Star Magnolia. Peter Vermeulen discovered it as a chance seedling and named it after his manager, Rein Vanderwolf.

How to use Vanderwolf's Pyramid Limber Pine in the landscape?

Who needs a gymnast when you can have a Limber Pine? So-named because of its ability to bend without breaking during bouts of heavy snow and icy conditions. Vanderwolf's Pyramid is a vigorous grower displaying an upright pyramidal habit. Long, dark blue-green needles decorate this superb evergreen. An awesome selection to be used as a specimen plant or as a screen.

How To Plant Vanderwolf's Pyramid Limber Pine

Being a native of wind-whipped mountain peaks, this tree is one tough cookie, coping with dry, rocky soil, heavy snowloads, and frigid winds. It does appreciate a more congenial site—say, one with regularly irrigated but well-drained soil. And it does struggle in the heat and humidity of the Deep South. Vanderwolf’s Pyramid makes a rather dense screen by nature, but as with all Pines, you can make the tree even fuller by snapping the new candles in half when they emerge in spring. Of course, this does slow growth.

Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

    Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

    How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
