Why Plant Wine & Roses® Weigela?
It's no secret why homeowners, landscapers, and hummingbirds (yes, hummingbirds!) alike often top their lists with the Wine & Roses® Weigela. Used in a hedge or as an eye-appealing accent shrub, the sharp contrast of the trumpet-shaped pink flowers against the narrow, oblong deep purple-black foliage doesn't only offer beauty to your landscape. The pink flowers also blooms twice - once in early Spring, and again in Summer! Another wonderful benefit of this plant is the appeal it has for hummingbirds. The Wine & Roses® Weigela is an adored favorite treat for the tiny, wondrous hummingbirds. With its natural disease and deer resistance, tolerance of clay soil, as well as being low maintenance, its easy to see why this plant is a popular choice! In 2000, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society awarded the Wine & Roses® Weigela the Gold Medal!
How to use Wine & Roses® Weigela in the landscape?
Create a beautiful hedge by planting the Wine & Roses® Weigela closer together for a more private, impenetrable row of beauty. Or plant the suggested 4-6' apart and see the beauty of each plant. You could also forget the row and plant throughout your landscape for the stunning contrast of purple-black foliage and rose-pink flowers. Whether it's the color blast of a hedgerow, or a planting to show off all the attributes of the Weigela, your planting selection won't be wrong. And no worries about diseases or deer related issues, as the Wine & Roses® Weigela is known to have no serious insect or disease problems and is deer-resistant. This plant would be nice to have near windows in your home so you can watch the delicate hummingbirds feast on the reddish-pink flowers in Spring and Summer; just don't plant where its growth can interfere with utility lines or air conditioning units.

How To Plant Wine & Roses® Weigela
The Wine & Roses® Weigela prefers a full-sun location with at least six hours of sun, but can tolerate some light shade. They will perform best in well-draining soil, but can also tolerate clay soil. Spacing does matter, as this plant will spread to 4-6'. If your goal is more of a hedgerow with no space between plants, you can plant them closer together to achieve your desired result. Your Wine & Roses® Weigela will need the most care immediately after planting.
How To Water
Your Wine & Roses® Weigela is a wonderfully low-maintenance plant, once you have it planted and established. The most important watering you will do will be the first two full seasons growing your Weigela. Besides giving your plant a thorough watering just after planting, it is important to provide one to two inches of water each week during the summer months for the first two seasons in the ground. Always allow the topsoil to dry out in the top few inches between waterings. After those first two seasons, your Weigela should rarely need water. During cold winters, water your plant thoroughly when you know a freeze is expected. Moist soil holds warmth much better than dry soil, helping your plant better endure the freeze.
How To Fertilize
When planting your Wine & Roses® Weigela in the ground, we recommend adding some Elements Starter Plant Food (available through Bower & Branch) to the soil as you're planting. Once planted, follow the instructions on the package for the amount to use based on the size of your plant. Fertilize in early and late spring, and again in midsummer. Do not fertilize after midsummer, so any new growth on the plant will have time to harden before the first frost.
How To Prune
Pruning the Wine & Roses® Weigela is not necessary, though it does respond well when pruned at the right time for shaping. The Wine & Roses® Weigela blooms on 'old wood', therefore, you want to keep pruning to the summer, after flowering. It is recommended you do not cut back more than 1/3 maximum of the growth. Pruning later in the year, November, for example, will not kill the plant, but will reduce the first flush of flowers for the next Spring and Summer. In this case, it may still produce some blooms later in the season.

How Does Sizing Work?
The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)
Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.
All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
