Why Plant Wireless® Zelkova?

We’ve all seen it. A guy plants a tree under a power line. Eventually, the tree gets way too big for its space, and then what happens? The tree gets topped, ruining its shape forever. Don’t be that guy. There are trees that are perfect for planting under utility lines—beautiful trees that never outgrow their space. The Wireless® Japanese Zelkova is one. This compact street tree will develop a flat-topped, wide-spreading canopy that stays out of the wires, yet allows for the passage of people and vehicles underneath. Handsome all season in its emerald-green foliage, its deep red fall color is a sweet bonus.

The Japanese Zelkova Tree is a large, regal, vase-shaped tree from Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and northeast China. Related to Elm Trees, but very resistant to Elm disease, it has gotten much more popular in this country since the arrival of that devastating disease many years ago. The Wireless® Zelkova was introduced by Keith Warren of J. Frank Schmidt Nursery in Boring, Oregon. The tree was a chance seedling that happened to have a different growth pattern than its siblings. Warren chose the tree for its size and shape, but he was wowed by its fall color, which he described as the best red he’d ever seen in a Zelkova.

How to use Wireless® Zelkova in the landscape?

The Wireless® Japanese Zelkova is an adaptable tree that’s happy on a country estate, in the heart of the city, and everywhere in between. Once established, this tough tree laughs in the face of heat and humidity, frigid winters (to -20°F), wind, de-icing salts, drought, compacted soils, and alkaline soils! Because of this trees interesting canopy shape, these trees provide amazing shade! Add them to create visual interest to patios, wide areas, or under power lines. Brings a elegant vibe to any garden.

How To Plant Wireless® Zelkova

Wireless® Japanese Zelkova is an easy-to-please tree that all gardeners will succeed with, provided its few simple needs are met. Plant this tree in a sunny location, as shade will cause it to lose its nice, tight habit. It isn’t picky about soil, but it doesn’t like “wet feet”—excess water must drain away after a rain. Pests and diseases are of no concern to this tough and hardy tree.

How To Water

They require keeping the soil moist (not too wet) after initial planting. Once established, they are more tolerant of drought conditions, reducing your hand-watering responsibilities.

How To Fertilize

During fall, feed your Zelkova Bower & Branch Elements Fertilizer once a year for about the first 3 or 4 years - this will give your tree all the nutrients it needs.

How To Prune

Pruning will seldom be necessary but if it is, Zelkovas should be pruned so that dead branches and twigs that may be diseased can be removed. Do not compost any disease branches, dispose of them appropriately in the garbage.

Please expect orders with multiple items to be delivered over a number of days as a result. Orders made up of numerous items or selections will not arrive at your home on the same day.

Shipping Delays:

From time to time, Bower & Branch Growers may determine to delay order shipment based on various factors for plant health. Weather in your region, as well as, where your plants are grown, is always considered when shipping. Extreme weather conditions may delay some or all of your order. Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
