Why Plant Yoshino Japanese Cedar?

The Yoshino Japanese Cedar, other wise known as the Japanese Cedar is one very fast-growing tree. In the summer, this columnar tree has beautiful deep green foliage, but cold weather winds in the winter may add a purplish-bronze color. The whole tree is covered in captivating and incredibly soft needles that create a fluffy appearance; we won't judge if you want to hug it! To top the cake, this tree is incredibly adaptable, tolerant of cold weather and poor soils. Yoshino trees have no pest or disease problems and is rather low maintenance. You won't have to worry to much after planting!

The national tree of Japan is Sugi, but we know it as Japanese Cedar, or Cryptomeria japonica. Cedar Avenue is a street lined with approximately 13,000 Sugi trees in Japan. Legand has it that Matsudaira Masatsuna, a Daimyo serving Shogun Tokugawa leyasu, arrived at the Shoguns funeral in Nikko Tosho-gu but was too poor to donate a stone lantern. He asked if he could plant an avenue of Sugi instead saying, “that future visitors might be protected from the heat of the sun”. His offer was accepted and the ambitious project which began around 1625, took 20 years to complete. Today of the 200,000 Sugi trees that were planted 13,000 still exist. The trees along Cedar Avenue of Nikko are over 380 years old and the total length of the avenue is 22 miles with an average height of 88 feet. The Cedar Avenue of Nikko has been entered into the Guinness Book of Record’s as the world’s longest avenue of trees.

How to use Yoshino Japanese Cedar in the landscape?

Personally, I think these Yoshino Cedars would look magnificent lining a driveway or creating property barriers as their giant height and width would give all the privacy you could ask for! Or as an accent, plant these in trios in the empty places in your landscape.

How To Plant Yoshino Japanese Cedar

Japanese Cedars are beautiful evergreens with unique foliage. They like full sun and good soil conditions, make sure that the soil is not too wet. Older varieties of Japanese Cedar tend to get a “bronze” tint to them in winter; Yoshino does also, but only slightly, even if planted in a protected area. The blue-green foliage color will return in spring. Yoshino Cedars are tough and adapt very easy to a variety of soils and climates. They love relaxing in full sun conditions and won't mind the occasional shade.

How To Water

While your Yoshino is establishing, water regularly to ensure strong and healthy roots. Once the tree has matured, it should get a minimum of an inch of water each week.

How To Fertilize

Japanese Cedar will benefit from an annual application of fertilizer. In the fall, apply a medium rate fertilizer for the first 3 or 4 years after planting. The fall application supplies your Japanese Cedar with nutrients needed to produce healthy new growth for the following spring.

How To Prune

This tree does a pretty good job of naturally growing in a symmetrical and columnar shape. So this fella won't need much pruning.

Bower & Branch allows our Growers to make final shipping decisions based solely to benefit your trees and plants’ health and success.

How Does Sizing Work?

The size of our trees have nothing to do with the container size like you may find elsewhere–big doesn't mean just height - it’s also vigor, age, and overall health. Other online retailers are going to tell you that a plant is a seven gallon, that means nothing to your tree or plant (or you.)

Our trees for sale online are graded on large, x-large, and even bigger sizes. This is because our trees are sized by their age—the higher the letter, the more mature the tree. The age determines the trees’ overall height, size of the trunk and the overall branch density.

All of these characteristics are what you should be looking for when choosing a tree for immediate impact and instant curb appeal. Our extra-large tree and plant sizes are sure to wow you and your neighbors!
